A Nation Sculpted By God to Carry Out the Great Commission

October 09, 2023

What was once a British colony called Tanganyika, the nation of Tanzania, was united with the island of Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964. The country was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania later that year as a blend of the two countries' names. Though not completely independent, the Zanzibar government exercises considerable local autonomy.

Tanzania's rich church history began in the early 16th century with the arrival of Catholic missionaries. Since then, the nation has been predominantly Catholic and has had large Islamic populations near the coastal regions. The nation is covered in a fertile land that produces mass amounts of gold, coffee, and cashew nuts. Now, Tanzania has over 11 million evangelicals and is geographically and culturally poised to reach thousands of unreached with minimal barriers.

The Lord has been beautifully and strategically shaping Tanzania for thousands of years. Regionally, its area was one of the first to hear the gospel of Jesus and take it to the nations. We assume the gospel first reached Tanzania's neighbor country, Kenya, roughly 30 years after the death of Christ because of Philip's baptizing of the eunuch from Ethiopia (modern-day Kenya) in the 1st century AD. This means that their region was one of the earliest locations to receive the Great Commission to ""go and make disciples of all nations."" Pray that the Lord would let that drive still ring true today so that the Tanzanian church could be awakened to how God has uniquely prepared it to reach UPGs
