A Strategically Placed West African Church

September 22, 2023

Nigeria, Chad, and the Republic of the Congo border the West African country of the Republic of Cameroon. The nation is home to nearly 28 million people who speak 284 native languages. Cameroon first heard the gospel from French and Jamaican Baptist missionaries in the late 1800s. Because of this original influence, there has been and continues to be a strong evangelical church in the nation that is growing at a rate higher than the world average!

Christians comprise 53% of the total population today, and evangelical Christians account for 9%. Because of the country's position in Muslim-dominated West Africa, there is a strong Muslim population in Cameroon, at 24% of the population. Source: Romania Legatum numbers Evangelicals experience great daily opportunities to reach the millions of unreached Muslims in their borders and their region.

The nation ranks low in Legatum's Prosperity Index, as much of the West African region does. However, despite some social tensions, the nation is religiously free, and the church is permitted to practice its faith and openly worship without fear of persecution! This is great news for all mission mobilization efforts! When considering all of these things, we Praise God for the work He has done and will do in Cameroon. We rank their mobilization potential as moderate.
