Ethiopia has a past of oppression and persecution but today remains moderately open in terms of religious freedoms. Source: Ethiopia corruption in government Historically an Orthodox Christian nation, Ethiopia continues to be predominantly Christian with a growing population of evangelical believers; however, Islam is also growing and is causing increasing tension throughout the country with violent extremist groups. Due to this, peace among the opposing religions is in decline, but Christian denominations are uniting even more.
Systemic poverty has negatively impacted the country and has led to a poor economy, declining health, and a dependency on foreign aid. A history of corruption has also led to an unstable political environment. Aside from the social and economic crises, Ethiopia still ranks high in many Mobilization Index sub-categories. Ethiopia is home to a large number of evangelicals, and mission efforts by the church are already being pursued. A growing number of Ethiopians have a vision for increased mission and mobilization efforts with the many unreached that live in or around the country. Overall, Ethiopia has great potential to be a powerful sending force throughout Africa.
