Up until the early 16th century, Mexico was ruled by numerous city-states scattered across the countryside. The Spanish conquistadors settled into the region and began to spread Catholicism and European culture in the early 1500s. From those events forward the Catholic church grew in impact to the point of being the driving force behind much of the culture of the region.
Now, Mexico boasts the 10th largest populations of any country in the world, as well as one of the 2nd largest populations of Evangelical believers in Latin America. While the vast majority of Mexicans are Catholic, there is a growing trend towards Evangelical Christianity; however within its region, Mexico has the lowest number of unreached people out of all other regions in the world. It is also home to an increasing amount of persecution and violence against Christians; currently they are the 39th most persecuted country in the world Source: Open Doors.
